Austria

All 19 Austrian universities recognize AP Exam grades in the admissions process. These include twelve Universitaeten, six schools of arts and music at the university level (Universitaeten der Kuenste, including the "Academy of Fine Arts Vienna,") and Donau-Universitaet Krems. All of these institutions will accept to their degree programs any candidate with a U.S. high school diploma, who also submits at least four AP Exams, each with a grade of 3 or higher, in the following content area ratio:

  • One AP Exam within the world languages content area or the English content area (the language must not be the mother tongue of the candidate; for persons with a multi-lingual background, only one language is regarded as mother tongue)
  • One AP Exam within the mathematics content area
  • Two additional AP Exams regardless of content area

To determine which exams qualify for a content area requirement, see the Content Areas & Exams chart below.

Candidates who meet the above criteria will be admitted to the university to which they applied; their U.S. high school diplomas will then be declared equivalent to an Austrian Reifezeugnis ("Matura"). For the admission to specific degree programs within the schools of arts and music, the six Universitaeten der Kuenste may require application material, such as a portfolio of artwork, in addition to an Austrian Reifezeugnis or a foreign equivalent.

Technically, only the universities -- Universitaeten -- and schools (universities) of arts and music -- Universitaeten der Kuenste -- are covered by this joint recommendation of the Rectors' Conference and the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. However, the Fach-Hochschulen and Fachhochschul-Studiengaenge also use AP Exams to assess qualifications from the United States.
